A systemic view of life

To understand better the profound implications of our systemic view of life, I quote an essay by Daniel Christian Wahl titled “Evolution shows collaboration, not competition. Help us evolve”. In the essay, Wahl builds his argument from the following quote by Fritjof Capra

and Pier Luigi Luisi:

“As the twenty-first century unfolds, a new scientific conception is emerging. It is a unified view that integrates, for the first time, life’s biological, cognitive, social, and economic dimensions. At the forefront of contemporary science, the universe is no longer seen as a machine composed of elementary building blocks. We have discovered that the material world, ultimately, is a network of inseparable patterns of relationships; that the planet as a whole is a living, self-regulating system. […]

Evolution is no longer seen as a competitive struggle for existence, but rather a cooperative dance in which creativity and constant emergence of novelty are the driving forces. And with the new emphasis on complexity, networks, and patterns of organization, a new science of qualities is slowly emerging.”

We live in a world where the financial titans and gurus believe that aggressive behavior, competition, hypermasculinity, and the cutthroat ethos of the marketplace are a direct consequence of our evolutionary success (we all have seen the archetypical Wall Street Alpha Male, implacably trying to conquer the financial world by himself and for himself). That follows the idea that in the world of the unapologetic Wall Street Alpha Male, the survival of the fittest was and is still fully applicable to guarantee financial success.

We believe that if humans are the most advanced species, it is because we have developed the most advanced means of collaborating. Our larger brains served primarily to allow us to form socially larger groups. And we developed speech—in order to work together. Thus, the whole competitive story of evolution might be a ruse put forth by some free-market radicals using a distorted view of nature to justify very unnaturally, destructive competition.

We evolved through cooperation

We work better together

We encourage our team members to visualize and execute the highest form of collaboration while working together. An essential principle is that we are a team engaged in and responsible for everyone’s wellbeing. By making collaboration a cornerstone of our daily dynamics, we will have a better working environment, and we all will be feeling part of a healthy organism moving towards a common direction. Obviously, in any group of people we will have differences, miscommunications, and sometimes even conflict. For that, we have developed an effective conflict-resolution system.

Since our technological platform is unique, we see other businesses offering similar services, not as a competition we have to attack or destroy in order to get a bigger slice of the proverbial pie, but as colleagues, needing our collaboration while protecting our success as a business.

COMO is not an aggressive firm trying to eliminate other enterprises engaged in the same line of services. Behind our collaboration dynamics, we can find highly ethical thinking and behavior. We are a model enterprise-ready and willing to break the traditional patterns of brutal competition, open hostility, and aggressive negotiating behavior. Our partners, clients, and the relationships we are cultivating must-see — even without advertising it ourselves — that collaboration is our distinctive trait.

Let's break some patterns

By taking this path, we are truly disruptive innovators in search of a healthier and most durable corporate culture: community work is more effective, more rewarding, and even aesthetically more beautiful than individualistic achievements. It is also clear we are aware of the existing tension between competition and cooperation and the delicate interplay between these supposedly polar relationships, but our inclination as COMO is for the great socio-economic payoff of Collaboration as our distinctive signature.
